The rapid development of emerging markets is changing the landscape of the world economy and may have profound implications for international relations. China is often regarded as the most influential emerging market economy because during the last three decades it has become integrated into the world economic system and its success and failure now affect the well-beings of other nations in the world. As the financial crisis in the US and EU intensifies, the economic prosperity of the world depends to a large extent on the sustained development of the Chinese economy and other emerging markets, and vice versa. The main theme of the Inaugural CEA (Europe) Conference and the 20th Annual Conference of CEA (UK) concerns China ’s role as a new engine for global economic growth and its impact on the rest of the world. Several distinguished scholars have expressed their interests in giving keynote speeches at our conference:
George A. Akerlof, 2001 Nobel Laureate, University of California, Berkeley.
Dwight Perkins, Department of Economics, Harvard University.
Yongding Yu, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
Thomas Rawski, University of Pittsburgh.
Submissions of theoretical and empirical studies are welcome.

Selected conference papers will be published in the Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies and an edited book.

You are invited to submit an abstract of 300-500 words by 25 March 2009, either through online submission (www.ceauk.org.uk), or email to jinghaizheng.cea@gmail.com. You will be informed within two weeks whether your paper can be accepted. Subsequently you will be expected to provide the full paper by 29 May 2009.
Conference fee is €105; PhD student fee is €40 (including membership of CEA and four issues of the Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies). Chinese students studying in the UK are particularly encouraged to submit their papers and participate in the conference. We will try our best to assist with your visa applications and transportation from the UK to Dublin.
About CEA (Europe)
China's economic development has become increasingly important for the world in general and for Europe in particular taking accounts the fact that EU is China's most important trading partner. A major effort we have been attempting at CEA(UK) was to push forward the establishment of the Chinese Economic Association (Europe), i.e., CEA (Europe).
We are now pleased to inform CEA (UK) members that the CEA (Europe) was successfully launched on 17 December, 2008 in Oslo. The new association was intended as a major expansion of activities by the CEA (UK) and will be officially established as a non-profit and independent legal entity by the end of June 2009. The main objective of CEA (Europe) is to promote scholarly exchanges and encourage academic leadership on Chinese economic and business studies in Europe. To celebrate the establishment of our new association, the Inaugural CEA (Europe) and 20th CEA (UK) Annual Conference will be held in Dublin, 23-24 July 2009. All CEA (UK) members will be offered free membership of CEA (Europe).
About CEA (UK)
The CEA (UK) was launched in 1988 and has since become one of the leading organisations in Europe promoting research on China. Its past annual conferences have attracted wide-ranging attention from academic institutions, government organisations, banks and industries, alongside the media in the UK and China.
Prominent speakers have included ministers from the Chinese and British governments, the Chinese ambassadors, and eminent academic figures of international repute including Nobel laureates of economic sciences. Papers from these conferences have been published in leading economics and business journals, edited books and the CEA (UK)'s official journal, the Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies, published by Taylor & Francis.
Since 2001, the CEA (UK) has run parallel annual conferences in the UK and in one of the key universities in China. Selected presenters at the UCD conference 2009 will be invited to attend the parallel conference at Renmin University of China in early September 2009.
